Plant Fever: Meet an Instagram Plant Fan
If you are a fan of plants and Instagram, you may already know David Morales (@theplantfever). His followers love his enthusiasm, plant selfies, and heart. This interview is edited.
COSTA FARMS: How many houseplants do you have?
DAVID: Not enough! Ahah. Like around 350ish, but that number changes all the time. I get new ones, lose some, propagate some new plants, give some away. That’s the beauty of it, you are able to take so many cuttings of different varieties of plants. Swap cuttings, give some to friends and family. There’s no better feeling (other than seeing the Trending Tropicals® Collection at your local big box stores) in the world than giving a plant cutting to someone and seeing them smile and glow.
DAVID: I’m pretty sure it’s no surprise that I have a huge obsession with Costa Farms. They are such an amazing company. I love how they are able to sell affordable healthy, beautiful plants to us plant people.
COSTA FARMS: What Trending Tropicals® plants do you have in your collection?
DAVID: Quite a few. Raindrop Peperomia, Little Fiddle Fig, Polka Dot Begonia, Raven® ZZ Plant, Nanouk Tradescantia, Watermelon Peperomia, Birkin Philodendron, Golden Goddess Philodendron, and Little Swiss Monstera. I'm still on the hunt for the others.
DAVID: I love all of my plant babies equally -- all 350 of my kids. But if my apartment were on fire, I’ll run to get my Polka Dot Begonia. Begonias are just one of my favorite houseplants. I love how there are so many to choose from, so many different colors, shapes, sizes, and even textures. The shimmer/glitter look is just a bonus.
COSTA FARMS: You mentioned you also really love Watermelon Peperomia. Why?
DAVID: Watermelon Peperomia reminds me of my amazing Mother. She loves watermelon and plants. This plant screams her name! Every time I walk to the plant room and turn to my left, I look at my Watermelon Peperomia. It puts a big smile on my face and reminds me to call my Mom and ask about her day. (So, a friendly reminder: If you’re reading this, call your Mom or just send her a simple “I love you message.” It’s the small things that count and they make a big difference in someone’s day.)
COSTA FARMS: How would you describe your relationship with plants?
DAVID: My relationship with my indoor plants is a bit obsessive, but I think it’s a good obsession. An obsession that doesn’t hurt anyone but my bank account. Ahah. My collection actually helps with my anxiety, and makes my apartment full of life, I think. I take care of them by watering them, fertilizing, making sure they are safe from pests, as well happy in my place. While they take care of my mental health. They mean everything to me.
COSTA FARMS: Thank you David, for sharing your love of plants with the world! Your enthusiasm makes us very happy!
