Champs-Élysées Pothos (Epipremnum aureum Champs-Élysées)

Champs-Élysées Pothos Plant Features

At first glance, you might think Champs-Élysées Pothos (Epipremnum aureum Champs-Élysées) is its cousin, Neon. Both varieties have eye-catching, neon-green foliage. But a closer look reveals unusual crests (some people say they look like gills) decorating the undersides of the leaves. This makes Champs-Élysées Pothos distinctive and unlike any other pothos variety.

Just like most other Pothos varieties, you can enjoy Champs-Élysées growing up a pole, trellis, or wall; hanging from a basket or plant shelf; or growing horizontally along a tabletop, mantle, or other surface. In warm, humid conditions, it will produce brown adventitious roots from nodes along the stem that allow it to climb. As it roots in and climbs, the leaves can grow to a much larger size, creating an even more spectacularly eye-catching plant. It can easily climb more than 10 feet if you have the space and don’t prune it. (But it’s easy to keep smaller, if you prefer, with regular trimming.)

Champs-Élysées Pothos is a relatively new introduction into the United States. It was found in Japan by Terunoworld nursery.

Champs-Élysées Pothos Growing Instructions

Champs-Élysées Pothos Light Needs

Champs-Élysées Pothos survives in a wide range of light conditions. While it tolerates low light, it won’t truly thrive in such an environment. You’ll find it grows best in medium- and high-light spots. (Within about 3 feet of a good-sized, unobstructed east- or west-facing window is ideal.) Don’t have a bright window? No worries. Champs-Élysées Pothos thrives happily under both natural and artificial light.

Tip: The brighter the light is, the brighter its leaf color is; in lower light levels, you may find the leaves emerge light green rather than golden-yellow.

Watering Champs-Élysées Pothos

Water your Champs-Élysées Pothos like other Pothos: Allow top half or so of the potting mix to start to dry between watering again. Be sure the potting mix never stays soppy or saturated for extended periods. If it stays too wet, the roots can suffocate, die, and then rot away. We recommend always checking the soil moisture levels before you water to prevent overwatering.

Humidity for Champs-Élysées Pothos

Champs-Élysées Pothos does well with the humidity levels found in most homes or offices. For optimal growth and performance (as well as increasing leaf size), it's helpful to boost the amount of moisture in the air, particularly in arid conditions.

Fertilizing Champs-Élysées Pothos

Like other houseplants, Champs-Élysées Pothos benefits from twice yearly feeding, generally in spring and summer when there's more light and the days are longer. Use a fertilizer formulated for use on houseplants. Follow the directions on the product packaging.

You can fertilize it more often if you wish for your plant to grow faster, but never exceed the recommendations on the product packaging (in terms of quantity or frequency). Excess fertilizer can burn and kill the roots.

Pruning Champs-Élysées Pothos

We grow Champs-Élysées Pothos from cuttings here on our farm. Our growers prune in a tight mound to reduce physical damage that may affect the plant in shipping or at the store. But as your plant matures, it will want to climb. You can display it as a hanging plant or train to grow up a moss pole. If you like to keep yours compact, pinch back new growth as necessary; this encourages the plant to develop side branches, giving it a full, lush look instead of fewer long stems. You can pinch or prune it at any time of the year without worry of hurting the plant.

This variety is grown for ornamental use and is not intended for human or animal consumption. We advise keeping it out of reach from children or pets that may nibble.
