Florida Ghost Philodendron (Philodendron Florida Ghost)

Florida Ghost Philodendron Plant Features

Philodendron Florida Ghost is a spectacular large, climbing variety that sports big (to more than 12 inches long as it matures) lobed leaves that emerge creamy white and slowly mature to dark green as they mature. Bumpy red petioles (leaf stalks) add extra interest.

As a young plant, Florida Ghost adds flair and texture to brightly lit desks, tabletops, and windowsills. Like most other climbing Philodendrons, it becomes more majestic as it grows and vines up. Without pruning, it can climb to more than 6 feet tall if you give it a support like a moss pole or wall. Its leaves become noticeably larger on older plants that are allowed to climb and grow in warm, bright conditions.

Florida Ghost is a mutation found on a variety called Florida (which is a hybrid between two easy-care species, P. pedatum and P. squamiferum). Because the new growth comes out with little chlorophyll, it grows more slowly than either of its parents.

Florida Ghost Philodendron Growing Instructions

Florida Ghost Philodendron Light Needs

Florida Ghost Philodendron needs medium to bright light to grow well. In most homes, that translates to being within about 3 feet of an unobstructed east- or west-facing window (or the equivalent with plant lights).

Note: The color of the new growth will be brighter and stay bright longer in brighter spots. With less light, the plant is less colorful.

Florida Ghost Philodendron Water Needs

This climbing houseplant survives drying out a little from time to time, so it's not a high water plant. While it survives getting dry, it thrives when provided consistent moisture. This makes this Philodendron a good choice for a self-watering system like Wick & Grow.

This self-watering system constantly delivers a small amount of moisture to the potting mix, keeping it just moist enough for the plant without overwatering.

If you want to water your Florida Ghost the traditional way, allow the top several inches of the potting mix to start to dry to the touch. If you are unsure whether your plant needs to be watered, it's usually best to wait.

Florida Ghost Philodendron Humidity Needs

Florida Ghost Philodendron prefers average to above-average relative humidity levels (over about 45 percent). In especially dry air, the leaves may not unfurling properly and come out deformed. If you are afraid the air in your home is too arid, try augmenting humidity. One way to do this is to place it close to other houseplants (plants release humidity into the air as they grow, so you can create a humid zone). Or place it near a small humidifier.

Fertilizing Florida Ghost Philodendron

Fertilize your Philodendron regularly if you wish. Fertilizing will help it grow more/faster. You can fertilize as little as once or twice a year or as often as the directions on the fertilizer packaging recommend.

In most areas, spring and summer are the best times to fertilize as the days are longer so there's more light to fuel more growth. You can use any general-purpose houseplant fertilizer, just be sure not to exceed the recommended application rates on the product packaging. Too much fertilizer can burn the roots and may possibly kill the plant.

Pruning Needs

Because Florida Ghost Philodendron is a relatively fast-growing climbing houseplant, you want to prune or pinch it back periodically to keep it full, and bushy. It's perfectly fine to let it grow without pruning--it depends on the look you want.

This variety is grown for ornamental use and is not intended for human or animal consumption. We advise keeping it out of reach from children or pets that may nibble.
