Heuchera Plant Features

Carpet your shade garden with the jewel-toned foliage of heuchera. This amazing perennial comes in a wide variety of colors including chartreuse, red, bronze, orange, purple, green, silver, and bi-color (so there's a perfect heuchera for every garden!). Plus, in late spring and early summer, heuchera sends up delightful spikes of small red, white, or pink bell-like flowers that give the plant it's common name of coral bells. The flowers are hummingbird favorites, too! Heuchera forms a compact, 12 to 20 inch tall mound of color that works well along a border's edge or pathway. Or, use heuchera in a container by itself or mixed with other foliage plants such as hosta and ajuga. Heuchera is also deer resistant. Hardy from zones 4-9.

Heuchera prefers a shady or partially shaded location with rich, well drained soil. Feed the plants with a slow-release granular fertilizer in the early spring. Heuchera is relatively drought resistant, but does best when mulched to maintain consistent soil moisture.

Heuchera 'Caramel'

More tolerant to heat and humidity than other heuchera, ‘Caramel’ offers creamy-apricot leaves topped by pink flower spikes in the early summer. In the North, ‘Caramel’ grows well in full sun, but where summers are hot, plant it in partial shade. Zones 4-9

Citronelle

Heuchera 'Citronelle'

Refreshing, chartreuse foliage and arching sprays of creamy-white flowers make ‘Citronelle’ heuchera an ideal selection for sun or partial shade. Like other heuchera it prefers rich, slightly moist soil. Zones 4-9

Mint Frost

Heuchera 'Mint Frost'

Sparkly silver leaves punctuated with dark green veins give ‘Mint Frost’ heuchera its name. This lovely variety also produces sprays of white flowers on red stalks in late spring. In the fall, the foliage turns a lovely shade of pink. Zones 3-8

Midnight Rose

Heuchera 'Midnight Rose'

An eye-catching heuchera for shade or part shade, 'Midnight Rose' features handsome purple leaves playfully splashed in hot pink. Zones 4-8

Palace Purple

Heuchera 'Palace Purple'

An award winning variety from the early 1990s, ‘Purple Palace’ heuchera is still exciting gardeners today. It has purple leaves and stalks of creamy white blooms in the late spring. ‘Purple Palace’ will retain its foliage and color over the winter. Zones 4-9

Paris

Heuchera 'Paris'

Unlike many heuchera that just bloom in the spring, ‘Paris’ develops pretty sprays of deep pink flowers throughout the summer. Its mint-green foliage is brushed with silver. Because it is a repeat bloomer, ‘Paris’ is a great addition to a mixed container. Zones 4-9

Petite Pearl Fairy

Heuchera 'Petite Pearl Fairy'

A dwarf heuchera, ‘Petite Pearl Fairy’ makes an ideal groundcover. Its small plum-colored leaves and dainty pink flowers are a winning combination. The plant forms dense clumps and work well along a garden path, rock garden, or in containers. Zones 3-8

Pewter Veil

Heuchera 'Pewter Veil'

Prized for its pale silver leaves with undertones of pink and purple, ‘Pewter Veil’ heuchera is a great addition to any garden. The new growth is coppery pink and the dainty flowers are white with purple highlights. Zones 4-9
