Monstera Burle Marx Flame (Monstera Burle Marx Flame)
Monstera Burle Marx Flame Plant Features
Monstera Burle Marx Flame is a relatively slow-growing vining Monstera variety that shows off thick, almost leathery medium green leaves. As it matures, it develops deep fenestrations, giving the leaf something of a flame-like look.
As a young plant, the leaves are more lance shaped with a long, narrow profile. But as the plant matures, the leaves grow wider and more heart shaped in outline.
Like Monstera deliciosa, Burle Marx Flame eventually grows into a large plant and needs a sturdy support. While still young, it makes for an interesting tabletop plant, but as it grows, it becomes more a statement plant for the floor. It can grow more than 6 feet tall in time, though it takes quite a while in average home conditions to get that large.
The plant was found in the garden of famed designer Burle Marx in Brazil. Unfortunately, its origin wasn’t recorded before the designer’s death, so it’s uncertain if Burle Marx Flame is a unique species, hybrid, or mutation of Monstera deliciosa.

Monstera Burle Marx Flame Growing Instructions
Monstera Burle Marx Flame Light Needs
While Monstera Burle Marx Flame will survive lighting conditions from low to high, it wants high light to truly thrive. Look for a spot within about 3 feet or so of a good-sized, unobstructed east- or west-facing window or augment with grow lights. Ideally, your plant should cast a good shadow most of the day.
When it doesn’t get as much light as it wants, you Monstera will grow more slowly and have longer lengths of stem between the leaves resulting in a leggier, lankier plant.
Watering Your Monstera Burle Marx Flame
As is true for a lot of other thick-leafed Monstera varieties, Burle Marx Flame holds up if it dries out. But keep it hydrated so it looks and grows its best. This Monstera Burle Marx Flame grows well in our Wick & Grow self-watering system which constantly delivers a small amount of moisture to the potting mix, keeping it just moist enough for the plant without overwatering.
If you want to water it the traditional way, it’s best to let the top couple of inches of the potting mix dry before watering again. (The difference is the amount of water being used at one time. The self-watering system may provide the same amount of water, or even less, on a consistent basis. Traditional watering typically means delivering a larger quantity of water to the plant at one time.)
Burle Marx Flame Humidity Needs
This vining houseplant does well with the humidity levels found in most homes or offices (40 to 60 percent). Because it's from tropical rainforest areas, it prefers higher humidity levels when available.
Fertilizing Monstera Burle Marx Flame
For strong, healthy growth, fertilize it at least twice a year. Spring and summer are usually the preferred seasons to do so as the sun is stronger and the days are longer, giving the plant more energy to use the nutrients you provide. You can give it any fertilizer labeled for use on houseplants. Just be sure to comply with the directions on the fertilizer packaging. You can fertilize as often as the packaging recommends but never exceed the instructions for use (in terms of quantity or frequency). Excess fertilizer can burn and kill the roots.
Pruning Monstera Burle Marx Flame
Because it’s a vining plant, you may need to prune your Burle Marx Flame if it reaches the top of your support. Otherwise, it does not require pruning. But you can also prune it anytime you wish by cutting off the top of the new growth.
This variety is grown for ornamental use and is not intended for human or animal consumption. We advise keeping it out of reach from children or pets that may nibble.
