Monstera subpinnata (Monstera subpinnata)
Monstera subpinnata Plant Features
Monstera subpinnata is a relatively uncommon (as a houseplant) species from South America that sports pinnately (feather-like) lobed-leaves. You might find its foliage looks more like palm fronds than your typical Monstera.
Its lacy-looking leaves give it a refined look in your home as it matures. When young, you can display it on a desk or tabletop, but as this vining plant grows, it appreciates a support on which to climb. If not allowed to climb, it may produce runner-type growth where leaves don't develop.

Monstera subpinnata Growing Instructions
Monstera subpinnata Light Needs
When it comes to light for your Monstera subpinnata, this beautiful climbing houseplant is pretty adaptable indoors. Like other Monstera, it wants to soak up as much light as you can give it inside. For the happiest growth, aim to keep it within about 3 feet of a good-sized window that faces east or west without any trees/buildings/overhangs/etc. blocking the sun.
Don't sweat it if you don't have a ton of natural light, though. You can enjoy the unique charm of your Monstera subpinnata under artificial lights.
Watering Your Monstera subpinnata
This plant can handle missing a watering now and then. But while it's a trooper about drying out a bit, it really takes off when you keep the moisture consistent. That's why Monstera subpinnata is a fantastic match for a self-watering setup, like our super handy Wick & Grow system.
Just a heads up: We do offer this plant in our self-watering containers. This system makes sure your plant gets just the right amount of water all the time, keeping the potting mix perfectly moist without ever getting soggy.
Humidity Needs
Your Monstera subpinnata will be just fine with the typical humidity levels you find in most homes or offices, usually around 40 to 60 percent. Being a native of those lush tropical rainforests, it definitely appreciates a boost in humidity if you can provide it.
Fertilizing Monstera subpinnata
To see your Monstera subpinnata really thrive, give it a little fertilizer at least twice a year. Spring and summer are usually the sweet spots for feeding, as the days are longer and the sun is stronger. Use a fertilizer made for houseplants and follow the instructions on the label. Feel free to fertilize a bit more often if you're looking for faster growth, but don't go overboard with the amount or how often you use it. Too much fertilizer can harm the roots.
Pruning
We start our Monstera subpinnata from cuttings we take from our own Mother Plants. Our expert growers give them a little trim to encourage a nice, upright shape, which also helps prevent any damage during shipping.
As your plant gets bigger it will want to climb! You can let it grow up a moss pole, a wall, or any other support you like. If you prefer to keep it more bushy and compact, just pinch back any new growth as needed. You can prune it any time of the year without worrying about stressing the plant.
This variety is grown for ornamental use and is not intended for human or animal consumption. We advise keeping it out of reach from children or pets that may nibble.
