Mount Salak Scindapsus (Scindapsus Mount Salak)
Mount Salak Scindapsus Plant Features
There are so many lovely Scindapsus varieties available as houseplants that it can be hard to pick which ones you want to grow. For us, Mount Salak was a no-brainer, though. This gorgeous variegated climbing plant features teardrop-shaped dark green leaves heavily mottled in silver and olive green. The effect is almost like camouflage.
Look closely in bright light and you'll notice the foliage has a sparkly appearance, giving it extra dimension and character.
Mount Salak grows best when allowed to climb, so yours will reach its fullest potential if you give it a moss pole, wall, or other structure to root into and ascend upward. As it climbs, the leaves grow larger and even more beautiful. It can be grown as a trailing plant for short periods, but after a while, it will develop leafless runners. Keep it climbing or prune it back periodically to prevent this.
It's named after a mountain in Indonesia, though in North America, it often goes by a nickname: Silver Splash.
Mount Salak Scindapsus Growing Instructions
Scindapsus Mount Salak Light Requirements
This gorgeous variegated houseplant grows happiest and healthiest in medium to bright light. It tolerates medium light and even lower-light levels, but it won't be as happy. (There's a big difference between just surviving and truly thriving!) If you're not sure whether the spot where you want to grow it has enough light, here's a check. Place an object there and note the shadow. If it casts a medium or strong shadow throughout the day, it should be fine for your plant. Tip: It does not require sunlight to thrive. It grows well under natural or artificial light sources, even in windowless offices with lots of overhead lights.
Watering Needs
This gorgeous climbing houseplant is largely considered relatively easy to grow because it's somewhat drought tolerant. While it can withstand being too dry from time to time, Mount Salak really hates being overwatered. If you water yours the traditional way, allow the top couple of inches of the potting mix dry to the touch before you water it again. If you're using a Wick & Grow™ self-watering planter, it's just fine staying evenly moist. (The self-watering system keeps it just moist without being too wet.)
Humidity Needs for Mount Salak Scindapsus
This houseplant prefers above-average relative humidity, but it will do well in more average conditions (40 to 60 percent relative humidity). If you have especially dry air in your home, boost ambient moisture by grouping your Scindapsus with other houseplants. Or place a small humidifier nearby.
Fertilizing Mount Salak
Fertilize this climbing/trailing houseplant in spring and summer, if you wish, with a fertilizer formulated for use on houseplants. Follow the directions on the product packaging. Never apply more fertilizer than the instructions recommend.
Pruning Tips
Pruning isn't required to grow a beautiful, healthy plant. But you can pinch back the new growth to encourage it to branch and become fuller, rather than focusing its growth from one main shoot.
This variety is grown for ornamental use, and is not intended for human or animal consumption.
