Variegated Kaempferia

$49.00

Have you heard of Kaempferia before? If not, you’re not alone! This stunning houseplant, sometimes called Peacock Ginger, is an underrated gem and we’re pleased to offer it!

This selection shows off gorgeous leaves highly variegated in streaks and splashes of creamy white. At first glance, it might remind you of a Calathea or Prayer Plant, but it’s actually in the ginger family (and more resilient).

Unlike a lot of the Monstera, Philodendron, and Pothos varieties that are so popular today, Variegated Kaempferia is not a climbing plant so you don’t have to give it special supports or have lots and lots of room. It grows as a tidy mound rarely reaching much more than about 12 inches tall.

It can produce attractive flowers in spring or summer, but this is relatively rare indoors. You’re more likely to see flowers if you give it a summer vacation in a shaded spot outdoors.

If you’re interested in adding this eye-catching, easy-care houseplant to your home, order now! Our team will carefully pack it up in a box and send it out for shipping. Shipping and handling are included in the price.

Light Level: Direct Sunlight

This plant loves direct sunlight. Place it by a window or on a porch that gets direct, natural light for at least a portion of the day.

Water Level: Thirsty

This plant can only go 1-2 weeks without water so check on it weekly and add water every time the top two inches of soil dry out.

Quick Tips

For the best-looking leaves, try to keep relative humidity around 50% or more. It tolerates lower humidity levels.

Plant Bio

Kaempferia Variegata

Hailing from areas of Southeast Asia, Kaempferia is in the ginger family, making it a relative of Curcuma and ginger (the pungent powder in our spice racks). Wondering where it got its moniker? It’s named for German explorer Englebert Kaempfer.

Like most houseplants, it grows best in bright light but tolerates medium light, too. We advise keeping it within about 3 or 4 feet of a good-sized, unobstructed east- or west-facing window, or the equivalent of with plant lights. It can take some morning sun through a window, particularly in Northern climates.

In our testing processes, it’s grown well in our Wick & Grow® self-watering system as long as you never overfill the reservoir. The potting mix stays moist, but not too wet for the plant. If you wish to water it the traditional way, it’s best to allow the top 25 percent or so of the potting mix to just start to dry between waterings. Take care not to overwater and swamp the potting mix. Both underwatering and overwatering can cause yellow/brown leaf edges.

Variegated Kaempferia grows well in average household temperatures, but thanks to its tropical roots, it holds up to heatwaves and doesn’t require particular care when the mercury soars. Do try to keep it over about 60F/15.5C for best results.

It prefers above-average relative humidity (over 50 percent) if you’re able to provide it. It can tolerate lower relative humidity levels, especially for short periods of time. In arid climates, it will benefit from growing in a display case or near a humidifier so you can better control its environment.
