How much light do houseplants need?

Most houseplants grow best with as much light as possible. Keeping them within three feet of an east- or west-facing window is a good starting point for most varieties. Bright indirect light is ideal for the majority of tropical houseplants. Low-light tolerant varieties like snake plants and pothos can manage further from a window, but will still grow better with more light.

How often should I water my houseplants?

Watering frequency depends on the plant, the light it receives, and the humidity in your home. A good rule of thumb is to check the potting mix before watering: if the top inch or two is still moist, wait. If in doubt, keeping most plants slightly dry is safer than keeping them too wet. Overwatering is the most common cause of houseplant decline.

Do houseplants need humidity?

Many tropical houseplants come from humid environments and appreciate higher relative humidity indoors. Average indoor humidity of 40 to 50 percent is acceptable for most varieties, but thin-leafed tropicals and ferns will perform better above 50 percent. A small humidifier near your plants is the most effective way to raise humidity levels.

What temperature is best for houseplants?

Most common houseplants come from subtropical regions and prefer temperatures similar to what feels comfortable to people, generally between 60 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid placing plants near cold drafts, heating vents, or air conditioning units, as sudden temperature fluctuations can stress the plant.
