Anthurium Hookeri Dark

$49.00

Anthurium Hookeri Dark makes a bold first impression with its deep green foliage and strong, upright form. Broad leaves emerge from the center of the plant, gradually building a full, rounded rosette. The darker coloring brings additional depth to the layered display and gives this bird’s-nest anthurium a rich, substantial appearance.

Its long, paddle-shaped leaves have a leathery texture and prominent veins that add definition from base to tip. Each new leaf builds on the plant’s sculptural form, creating a dense display that can be appreciated from multiple angles. Anthurium Hookeri Dark is grown primarily for its impressive foliage rather than the colorful spathes associated with flowering anthuriums.

With its dark foliage and architectural shape, Anthurium Hookeri Dark creates a strong focal point in a bright indoor space. Give it bright, indirect light and water when the top couple of inches of the potting mix dry.

Light Level: Indirect Sunlight

This plant needs to live in a room with at least some natural light. Place it on a table or countertop with windows nearby.

Water Level: Not Thirsty

This plant can go several weeks without water. Only water it when the soil dries out completely and be careful not to over-water.

Quick Tips

Place Anthurium Hookeri Dark where bright light can bring out the depth of its foliage and its rounded form can be viewed from multiple angles. A tabletop, plant stand, or other open display gives its broad leaves room to create a full, layered silhouette.

Plant Bio

Anthurium hookeri Dark

Anthurium Hookeri Dark is an unnamed darker-leaved variant of Anthurium hookeri. It shares the broad foliage and bird’s-nest form of the base species, but its deeper green coloring gives the plant a richer overall appearance. Leaves emerge from the center and overlap as they grow, gradually creating a full, rounded rosette.

Anthurium hookeri was formally named in 1841 and is native from St. Lucia through parts of northern South America. In its wet-tropical habitat, it grows as an epiphyte, using trees for support rather than rooting in the ground. It is not parasitic and does not take nutrients from the tree. Instead, its roots anchor the plant in place while gathering moisture and nutrients from rain, humid air, and organic material that collects around it.

Its leathery leaves can become remarkably substantial as the plant matures. In its natural habitat, mature leaves can reach nearly 3 feet long. The leaves also bear tiny dark glandular dots on their undersides. These dots are a natural characteristic of the species rather than evidence of pests or disease.

Anthurium Hookeri Dark grows best in bright, indirect light. Natural or artificial light both work well. Place it near an unobstructed east- or west-facing window or provide equivalent light from a plant light. Good light supports strong growth and helps the plant maintain a full, balanced form. It can take some direct morning sun until about 10 a.m. but protect it from harsh afternoon sun.

In our self-watering system, the wick draws moisture from the reservoir into the potting mix as the plant needs it. Refill the reservoir regularly without overfilling it. If watering traditionally, water when the top couple of inches of the potting mix dry. Saturate the mix thoroughly, then allow excess water to drain.

Anthurium Hookeri Dark appreciates warm indoor conditions and above-average relative humidity. Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes. In a dry home, placing it near other houseplants or using a humidifier can help support healthy foliage. Good air circulation is beneficial when humidity is elevated.
