Ageratum is a plant for you if you want an annual flower that's easy to grow and attracts butterflies. This old-fashioned flower is popular again because it's so easy to grow. Once called floss flower because the flowers have a fluffy look, kind of like lavender cotton candy, ageratum thrives in gardens, landscapes, and containers. It's also fun when cut and used in bouquets. 

Most varieties of ageratum get kind of tall, so they're best for the middle or back of the border -- or as a big filler plant in a container garden. Their look makes them especially well suited to cottage-style gardens, but you can also blend them pretty seamlessly in just about any other garden style, as well.

Ageratum Growing Instructions

Grow ageratum in full sun or part shade and moist, well-drained soil. It ageratum is in too much shade, it won't bloom as much (or attract as many butterflies) and may develop especially tall, lanky stems. Once established, it tolerates drought fairly well but puts on the best flower show when it's watered during times of drought. Spreading a layer of mulch over the soil can help the ground stay moist longer, making ageratum even easier to care for. 

Cut off old flowers as they fade to keep this sun-loving annual looking its best and blooming profusely throughout the summer. No other pruning is necessary to grow beautiful ageratum.
