Neon Joy Pothos (Epipremnum aureum Neon Joy )

Neon Joy Pothos Plant Features

Neon Joy Pothos (Epipremnum aureum Neon Joy) is a delightful and eye-catching variety that has lime-green foliage (reminiscent of the old Neon Pothos variety), but with smaller leaves and irregular medium-green edges. At first glance it could be mistaken for Global Green, though Neon Joy sports significantly brighter color when grown in the same lighting.

While its color pattern is different than other Pothos varieties, it grows the same. You can enjoy this houseplant as a climbing plant or trailing plant. Or, if you want, allow it to grow horizontally across a surface like a desk or mantle. It looks particularly beautiful cascading from a plant shelf. In warm, moist conditions, it readily makes little brown adventitious roots along the stem. These adventitious roots start out like little bumps, but as they grow, they attach to a surface, allowing the plant to climb. If it climbs, Neon Joy’s leaves can grow to a much larger size. It can easily climb more than 10 feet if you have the space and don’t prune it. (But it’s easy to keep smaller, if you prefer, with regular trimming.)

Neon Joy is said to be a naturally occurring sport (mutation) of Golden Pothos found in Thailand. We’re excited to grow it and offer it to plant parents across North America.

Neon Joy Pothos Growing Instructions

Neon Joy Pothos Light Needs

Just like other Pothos varieties, Neon Joy survives in a wide range of light conditions. While it tolerates low light levels, it doesn’t really thrive there. And it shows off much better color in bright light. You’ll find Neon Joy grows far better in medium- and high-light spots. (Within about 3 feet of a good-sized, unobstructed east- or west-facing window is ideal.)

Don’t have a bright window? No worries. Neon Joy Pothos does great under artificial light, too.

Watering Your Neon Joy Pothos

It’s not a particularly thirsty plant, so you can water Neon Joy like other Pothos varieties. A lot of plant parents like to allow top half or so of the potting mix to start to dry between watering again. Be sure the potting mix never stays soppy or saturated for extended periods. If it stays too wet, the roots can suffocate, die, and then rot away. We recommend always checking the soil moisture levels before you water to prevent overwatering.

Note: We offer it in a self-watering system. This self-watering system constantly delivers a small amount of moisture to the potting mix, keeping it just moist enough for the plant without overwatering.

Neon Joy Pothos Humidity Needs

Neon Joy Pothos does well with the humidity levels found in most homes or offices. For optimal growth and performance (as well as increasing leaf size), it's helpful to boost the amount of moisture in the air, particularly in arid conditions.

Fertilizing Neon Joy Pothos

Neon Joy Pothos benefits from twice yearly feeding (or more). As a general rule, spring and summer are the best times to fertilize because there's more light and the days are longer. Use a fertilizer formulated for use on houseplants and follow the directions on the product packaging. You can fertilize it more often if you wish for your plant to grow faster, but never exceed the recommendations on the product packaging (in terms of quantity or frequency). Excess fertilizer can burn and kill the roots.

Pruning Neon Joy Pothos

Our crop of Neon Joy Pothos comes from cuttings taken from our Mother Plants. Our growers prune in a tight mound to reduce physical damage that may affect the plant in shipping or at the store. But as your plant matures, it will want to climb. You can display it as a hanging plant or train to grow up a moss pole. If you like to keep yours compact, pinch back new growth as necessary; this encourages the plant to develop side branches, giving it a full, lush look instead of fewer long stems. You can pinch or prune it at any time of the year without worry of hurting the plant.

This variety is grown for ornamental use and is not intended for human or animal consumption. We advise keeping it out of reach from children or pets that may nibble.
