Trending Tropicals® Collection: Meet Watermelon Peperomia

It’s easy to see how Watermelon peperomia came by its name. Each of its beautiful, heart-shape leaves is marked with green and silver swirls that resemble the skin of a fresh watermelon. And, like a cold slice of watermelon on a hot day, Watermelon peperomia is a refreshing choice.

A member of our Trending Tropicals® collection, Watermelon peperomia is a snap to care for and is compact enough to fit almost anywhere in your home. The plants only grow 6 to 10 inches tall and wide.

Native to the jungles of  South America, Watermelon peperomia thrives prefers warm, humid conditions and bright, indirect light. It won’t like living in deep shade or direct sun. That means you should place your plant near a bright window, but not right up against the glass where it might get burned by the direct rays of the sun. If you notice the variegation on your plant is starting to fade, it’s probably because your plant isn’t getting quite enough light.

Watermelon peperomia likes it on the warm side, too. Temperatures between 70 and 85 degrees F are ideal.

Water your plant whenever the surface of the soil feels dry to the touch. Watermelon peperomia won’t thrive in wet conditions so be sure to let the soil dry out slightly before giving it additional moisture.

Because of its small size, it’s easy to find space for more than just one Watermelon peperomia in your home. Try a trio along a bathroom vanity or tub where they will enjoy the extra humidity. Or, use them singly to bring color and charm to your living room, bedroom, or entry. It’s also fun to mix them with other peperomia varieties in a terrarium or on a plant stand.

See other beautiful peperomias.
