Make It Easy

We combined three of the easiest summer plants you can grow to make this small, 3- by 3-foot garden! In the middle we planted lantana Bandana Light yellow, a heat- and drought-tolerant variety that blooms without fail all summer long. Besides being a cinch to grow, lantana is also an ideal plant to use for attracting butterflies.

An equally good butterfly attractor, zinnia Profusion Double Yellow, sets off the lantana's pale, creamy tones perfectly. Like lantana, you can count on zinnia to thrive in hot, dry conditions.

Rounding out the garden is an annual groundcover: portulaca Cupcake Yellow Chrome. Actually a succulent, this may be the most durable of the three. It practically smothers itself in rich, golden-yellow blooms all summer.

Snapdragon Arrow Red-Yellow Bicolor features fragrant reddish-yellow flowers accented with yellow markings. Flowering prolifically until summer heat sets in, it's a lovely sign of spring. Planted with it is osteospermum Crescendo Yellow, another cool-weather favorite that offers charming lemon-yellow daisy-shaped flowers that bear purple centers. Both the snapdragon and osteospermum also make good springtime cutflowers for early May Day bouquets!

Dress Your Mailbox

Dress Your Mailbox

Make your front yard more welcoming by planting around your mailbox! We put together this small-space mailbox garden that features spring and summertime favorites.

Softening the mailbox is black-eyed Susan vine, a delightful climber that features a profusion of golden-yellow flowers all summer long -- no matter how hot the weather gets. Its trumpet-shaped flowers are accented by petunia Perfectunia Sun, a low-growing, mounding variety that produces a plethora of soft, creamy-yellow flowers throughout the summer.

To add texture to the mix, we included argyranthemum Beauty Yellow, a spring bloomer that features soft, finely divided foliage that looks a bit like a fern. The cheery yellow flowers look like daisies and appear all spring and again in fall. Ammi, an infrequently grown cut flower, adds even more lacy texture with its fine leaves and dome-like clusters of white flowers. In addition to being an elegant addition to flower arrangements, it's ideal for attracting butterflies.

Creating a carpet of color, we included sanvitalia Million Suns Yellow -- another heat-tolerant flower that blooms all summer long. It features tiny yellow, daisy-shaped flowers that pick up when the argyranthemum starts to slow.

Start Spring Off Colorfully

Start Spring Off Colorfully

You're yearning for color once winter ends, right? If so, we put together this little brightly colored bed just for you! Filled with spring-blooming, frost-tolerant favorites, it's perfect for the beginning of the season.

Argyranthemum Beauty Yellow creates an upright mound of frilly foliage topped by lemon-yellow daisies. We love it for both the flowers and the leaves! Next to it, we've included African daisy Voltage Yellow, which offers brighter yellow, larger daisy-shaped flowers. It's also one of the most heat-tolerant African daisies we've grown, so it'll continue to provide flowers once summer heat starts to arrive.

Two other springtime flowers round out the mix. Pansy Delta Yellow with Blotch is an eye-catching addition thanks to its bright yellow flowers accented with dark, burgundy-red centers. Like other pansies, it practically radiates happiness. Snapdragon Snapshot Yellow offers soft, creamy-yellow flowers that match the argyranthemum.

You can't go wrong with marigolds in the garden, so we planted Taishan Gold African marigold, which features big, lemon-yellow flowers over dark green foliage. It's a butterfly magnet! Next to it, we added the big, beefy texture of black-eyed Susan Denver Daisy, which shows off big flowers in shades of rich gold.

Argyranthemum Butterfly Yellow produces more daisy-shaped flowers in spring to help the garden get an early start. Lantana Bandana Lemon Zest cools the hotter yellows with its soft, shade reminiscent of lemon chiffon. Calibrachoa Dream Kisses Tiger Eye provides a carpet of color from its golden-orange blooms that are accented with bright orange throats.

An all-yellow garden doesn't have to be boring -- especially if you accent with other colors. This garden, for example, starts with portulaca Cupcake Carrot, which has orange flowers that are highlighted with a bright yellow center. It accents blanket flower Arizona Red -- an easy-care North American native perennial that has orange-red flowers tipped in yellow. It's fantastic for bringing butterflies to your yard. For soft, pure yellow, we added in dahlia Grandahlia Yellow, a perfect complement to the portulaca and blanket flower. Dahlias are wonderful cut flowers for bouquets -- and this variety boasts impressive garden performance.
